Is Nutritional Yeast Okay for Someone with Candida?

QUESTION:

A few modules back, we read in Staying Healthy with Nutrition that nutritional yeast is a great source of B vitamins. I was wondering if nutritional yeast is okay to suggest to someone that has Candida issues? My research brought up mixed answers with some saying that it was okay because it is “deactivated”, but others said that it would cause a Candida flare up.

INSTRUCTOR ANSWER:

This is a great question. Nutritional yeast is a great source of B vitamins and a “vegan” source of B12 (although it might not be enough or absorbed well enough to sustain someone who is deficient in B12 on a vegan diet). I would have someone who is actively having yeast or Candida issues stay away from nutritional yeast while they are getting their bacterial balance under control. After things are more balanced, then I would try adding back in nutritional yeast and see if it causes a flare up.
