Module Overview
FOOD RELATIONSHIPS AND PRACTICES
Food and our relationship with it is part of our identities, both individually through our unique experiences and collectively through our cultural heritages. This module reflects on this complex relationship and explores how differences between our modern food landscape and traditional food practices have impacted our health.
INTRODUCTION TO ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
Foundational anatomy and physiology concepts and terminology provide
a necessary backbone for practitioners to understand the human body
and its nutritional needs. Students will learn about the organs associated
with and the general functions of the primary systems in the body.
BASICS OF NUTRITION
To understand the impact our food has on our health, we must
understand the connection between nutrients and physiology. This
module offers an overview of the roles of macronutrients and
micronutrients in the body, how specific nutrients support function, and
nutritional needs through the lifecycle.
NUTRIENT-DENSE DIET PT. 1
Whole, thoughtfully prepared, foods are a source of joy and nourish the
body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. This module will guide students
through food sourcing considerations, traditional preparation methods,
food industry language, meal planning, and accessible and effective
changes to make in the kitchen to use food to achieve optimal health.
SLEEP
Adequate, quality sleep is essential for optimal physiological and
cognitive function. This module explores the impacts sleep has on our
health and provides strategies for maximizing the benefits this restorative
practice can provide.
STRESS
We cannot always control our stressors, but managing our response to
stress has profoundly positive physical and mental impacts on health.
Students will explore the effects of stress on our health and learn
supportive approaches for navigating the stress response holistically.
DIGESTION
What we eat has little impact if we can’t digest and absorb the nutrients.
Proper digestive function is essential for the health of every cell and
system. This module takes a deep dive into the north to south process of
digestion, including the role of the nervous system, the microbiome,
common roots of disfunction, biotransformation and elimination, as well
as effective strategies to support healthy digestive function.
BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION
From energy balance, metabolism, and inflammation to hormone
production and mental health, blood sugar regulation is crucial to
maintaining wellness. Students will learn the physiology and importance
of healthy blood sugar regulation, its ripple effects throughout many
processes and systems of the body, and how to support balanced blood
sugar levels through nutrition and lifestyle practices.
NUTRIENT-DENSE DIET PT. 2
At the heart of an NTP’s approach to wellness is the concept of bioindividuality, which is the belief that each person is unique and has
nutritional needs that differ from anyone else. This module uses case
study intensives to help students translate all the information they have
learned about nutrition and physiology into practical, customized
strategies for specific health goals and nutrition outcomes.
SUPPLEMENTS
Demystify the world of nutritional supplementation and discover when
and how to select the best nutrient formulations for your clients. This
module provides a framework for vetting supplement quality, application,
and efficacy, empowering the practitioner to determine which options
will have the biggest impact when the body needs concentrated support.
INTRO TO THE NUTRITION ANALYSIS AND CLINICAL APPLICATION (NACA) PROCESS
Learn a comprehensive framework for evaluating client information and creating holistic recommendation plans that are effective, accessible, and customized to the bio-individual needs of each client.
ANALYZING AND ANNOTATING DATA ON CLIENT FORMS
In this module, students will be guided by a seasoned practitioner through the process of making clinical observations, recognizing signs and symptoms of dysfunction, understanding patterns, and making connections to support recommendations.
PRACTITIONER FORMS AND INITIAL INTERVIEW VISIT
As an NTP, you’ll receive a full suite of practitioner forms and reports
through a clinical platform called Nutri-Q. You will learn how to
effectively leverage these tools and how to use Motivational Interviewing
techniques to conduct client intake sessions with practice clients.
FORMING RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONDUCTING VISIT
Once you’ve gathered and assessed all your client data, this module will teach students how to turn their insights into recommendations that will empower a client to make positive changes and progress toward their health goals. This is where you translate your knowledge into practical action!
CONDUCTING ONGOING SESSIONS AND EVALUATING CLIENT PROGRESS
Understanding how to support clients through the change process is a
large component of being a successful practitioner. Once the client
understands the changes they need to make, being able to offer
accountability and resources, identifying when something needs to pivot,
and helping to problem solve when new obstacles arise are essential to
supporting client success.
BEYOND NUTRITION
As important as food is to health, there are numerous other factors–
some within our control and some outside of our control–that influence
our health status. This module will explore some of the considerations
thoughtful practitioners must factor in when supporting someone’s health
journey.
PRACTICE RESOURCES
In this module, students will be given tips and resources for setting up
their own practices. Scope of practice and legal implications,
professional organizations in which students may be interested, and
introductory business building tips will be included.
