Faces Of The NTA Meet Melissa Shafer

Learn more about Melissa Shafer

How long have you worked for the NTA? What is your role?

I’m an associate instructor and I’ve been in this role since the summer of 2018.

What attracted you to work at the NTA?

I want to be a part of training strong, excited, capable, and compassionate NTPs and NTCs who are ready to go out into the world and do the amazing work that they feel led to do.

What do you love about working for the NTA?

I love the community and family aspect of working for the NTA. It was like getting instant friends who care about all of the same things that I do.

What are you most proud about accomplishing in your time at the NTA to date?

Graduating my first class! Love you Phoenix grads!

What do you love the most about our community?

HOPE. This work, my students, my colleagues, all give me hope for healing and change.

What is your favorite fat?

Butter! No question. As I was grabbing extra butter to take on a camping trip recently, my son said “Good idea mom, butter goes with everything! Chips…chocolate….” Can’t say that he’s wrong.

What is your least favorite food?

That darn gluten. I’m allergic. Celiac but #notsuffering

What’s your most used cook book or recipe blog and why?

Danielle Walker of Against All Grain was my intro to paleo cooking and her recipes never disappoint! When I did AIP, I loved the Autoimmune Wellness Handbook, and I still make the Stromboli from The Healing Kitchen, it’s a favorite in my family.

What are you reading (or listening to) right now?

I just finished So Good They Can’t Ignore You, loved it. I recently listened to Better Than Before and love the beginning questions for getting to know yourself better that Gretchen Rubin laid out in the book. Not long ago, I read She Would Be King, a person can’t live on self-improvement and nutrition books alone!

In your mind, what are the biggest challenges the holistic health community faces?

A lack of questions. Where is this food from? Who grew it or raised it? Who stands to benefit from the results of this study? What makes me feel good? Does this apply to me? Why do you think this medication, supplement, or way of eating is a good idea for me? Dear insurance company, will you please start to cover alternative therapies? Who is profiting from this? Ask away.

Want to speak with an instructor?

Join us for a Live Info Session. One of our Senior Lead Instructors will go in-depth, discussing the differences between our programs. This is a great opportunity for you to get your questions answered and to determine if one of the NTA programs is right for you!
