2014 Annual Conference
The Nutritional Therapy Association is pleased to announce the 7th Annual Nutritional Therapy Association Conference. The conference will be open to Nutritional Therapy Practitioners, students of NTA and others with an interest in nutrition and alternative healthcare. This year’s theme Revisiting the Foundations of Health, will be addressed by presentations from nationally acclaimed speakers and local experts in the field of nutrition. The conference will take place March 21st, 22nd & 23rd, 2014 at the Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center in Seattle, WA.
Speakers to Include:
Mark McAfee, CEO, Organic Pastures Dairy
Founder of Organic Pastures Dairy, Mark is internationally recognized as an expert in raw milk production, and has spoken in over fifteen states and three countries on the subject. He invented the first -dietary supplements- made from fresh raw colostrum, and secured their certification from the FDA and DHS. Mark created and published the first international raw milk safety standards at www.rawusa.org. In addition, he has worked for sixteen years as an EMS paramedic, and served as marketing director and operations manager for a $30 million dollar EMS company. He is pre-med trained, and is an experienced medical educator. Mark is a licensed private pilot.
Julie Matthews is an internationally respected autism diet and nutrition specialist. As a Certified Nutrition Consultant, Julie provides diet and nutrition intervention guidance backed by extensive scientific research and applied clinical experience. She has helped thousands of children worldwide through her public education programs, conferences sessions, private consultations, her blog, and website. Julie serves on the scientific advisory panel of The Autism File, and is an honored member of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP), and is a co-founder of Nourishing Hope.
Dr. Robert Blaich is an internationally recognized natural healthcare expert, both as a physician and a teacher. His experience in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) spans thirty-five years. Following pre-medical education he pursued a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, and became fascinated with a discipline and holistic approach to healthcare called Applied Kinesiology (AK). This system, based on doctor-patient interactive assessment of functional problems, challenges the physician to look at each patient as a biochemically unique individual. The orientation is to evaluate and treat the person who has the symptom, rather than treating the symptom itself.
Dr. Blaich has been a Health and Human Performance Consultant to world-class, Olympic and professional athletes, CEOs, and health care practitioners. Dr. Blaich has worked with people who went on to win Olympic gold medals, the Tour de France, the Ironman, the Indianapolis 500, the Sebring 12-Hour Race, and the Superbowl. He has also worked with many notable authors, musicians and performers to help them function at their highest levels. He is not anti-drug; he is pro-health.

She is one of the leading North American health and wellness experts fighting the battle against obesity. Tosca has a B.Sc., B.Ed. and is a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.
In her multiple roles as author, certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, fitness model and motivational speaker, Tosca translates healthy eating into an easily adaptable and enjoyable lifestyle that has attracted big-name celebrity followers such as Angelina Jolie, Bobbi Brown and Paula Abdul. She sits on the board for the Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA) and the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM).
Dr. George Birnbach, founder of The New Patient Academy
Dr. George Birnbach, chiropractor and professional consultant to health care professionals. Nora Gedgaudas, author of Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and A Longer Life
Nora Gedgaudas, a widely recognized expert on what is popularly referred to as the “Paleo diet” is the author of the international best-selling book, Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and A Longer Life. She is also a highly successful experienced nutritional consultant, speaker and educator, widely interviewed on national and international radio, popular podcasts, television and film. Her own popular podcasts are widely listened to on iTunes and are available for free download, along with numerous free articles and a location on the homepage, where anyone can subscribe for her free newsletter. She maintains a private practice in Portland, Oregon as both a Board-Certified nutritional consultant and a Board-Certified clinical Neurofeedback Specialist.
Michele Simon, JD, MPH, author of Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back
Michele Simon is a public health lawyer specializing in legal strategies to counter corporate tactics that harm the public’s health. Simon has been researching and writing about the food industry and food politics since 1996. Also an expert in alcohol policy, for 4.5 years she served as research and policy director for Marin Institute (now Alcohol Justice), an alcohol industry watchdog group based in Northern California. Her groundbreaking 2007 report on alcoholic energy drinks led to federal action to ban the dangerous products. More recently, Simon’s report: And Now A Word From Our Sponsors: Are America’s Nutrition Professionals in the Pocket of Big Food? Received extensive media coverage nationwide.
Her first book, Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back, was published by Nation Books in 2006. New York University Professor Marion Nestle (who calls the book “brilliant”) has made it required reading for her nutrition students. An accomplished and engaging speaker, Simon lectures internationally on corporate tactics and policy solutions. She has a master’s degree in public health from Yale University and received her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. In 2013, Simon was awarded the National Association of Nutrition Professionals’ Community Award and the Nutritional Therapy Association’s Award of Excellence.
TJ Johnson, BA, MES
TJ is the Director of the Local Food Systems Program at Sustainable South Sound, and a visiting faculty member at The Evergreen State College where he teaches in the Ecological Agriculture Program. He was a founder of the Thurston Food System Council, and served as Chair of the Council for the past two years. In 2011 he was the primary organizer of Come to the Table – Food Summit South Puget Sound, an event that marked the emergence of an organized local food movement in Thurston County.
In 2008 he founded the Wendell Berry Community Garden, which over the past 5 years has produced over $50,000 worth of nutritious, organic food without the use of fossil fuels or chemicals while educating the public about the potential for sustainable urban food production to catalyze an economic and ecological transformation of the community.
Deanna Minich, PhD, FACN, CNS, RYT – Body-Mind-Spirit Nutritionist, Author, Artist, Yoga Practitioner
Deanna Minich is an internationally-known nutritionist and author with more than twenty years of experience in nutrition, wellness, and healing. Her unique approach to nutrition is derived from a combination of her study in biological and medical science together with ancient medical and spiritual practices. She has had the privilege of being trained in functional medicine by the “father of functional medicine” – Dr. Jeffrey Bland – for over a decade. Other significant mentors include Phyllis Bowen, PhD, RD, at the University of Illinois at Chicago; functional medicine nutritionist, Barbara Schiltz; medical intuitives, Caroline Myss, PhD and Patrice Connelly, and Native American healer, Char Sundust.
Her training and studies assisted her in developing Food & Spirit™ as a science-based approach to nutrition within a framework of spiritual traditions to assist individuals in experiencing greater personal growth through their relationship with food. Dr. Minich has a Doctorate (Ph.D.) from the University of Groningen in The Netherlands (Dissertation Title: Essential Fatty Acid Absorption and Metabolism) and Master’s Degree (M.S.) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has had further training and certification through the American College of Nutrition (Certified Nutrition Specialist and Fellow) and the Institute of Functional Medicine. In conjunction with her academic training, she has had a variety of spiritual mentors to learn Shamanic healing practices, Reiki, (medical) intuitive assessment, and is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with a foundation of more than 20 years of yoga practice. She is currently a consultant to the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute, faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine, along with serving as adjunct faculty for the University of Western States and the Maryland University of Integrative Health.
Beverly Teter, PhD, MACN, CNS
Beverly Teter has studied the chemistry, biochemistry and metabolic effects of trans fatty acids for nearly thirty years and has worked for 20 years in the lipids lab of the biochemistry department at the University of Maryland. She was the first researcher to report the effects of these isomeric fatty acids on the milk fat in mice, cows and women. Dr. Teter has provided seminars and published numerous research papers dealing with fatty acid composition and metabolism. She has collaborated with Dr. Mildred Seelig and Dr. Mary Enig. Dr. Teeter holds two patents with three additional patents are pending. Beverly Teter received her B.S. degree in chemistry from George Washington University and her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Maryland.
Denise Minger, author of Death by Food Pyramid
Denise Minger is a health writer and lecturer with a reputation for aggressively challenging today’s leading voices of conventional wisdom. Her meticulously researched critiques decimating USDA guidelines and The China Study—published on her blog,RawFoodSOS.com—have made her a major player in the progressive health community, and a major thorn in the side of both mainstream nutritionists other health figures promoting flawed dietary dogma.
A precocious academic whiz and autodidact who started college at age sixteen, Denise’s own diet-related health problems plunged her, total immersion style, into the world of nutrition research—ﬁrst in attempt to heal her own body, and then to help others do the same. Denise currently lives a “real food” lifestyle in Portland, Oregon.
Andrea Nakayama, CNC, CNE, CHHC
Andrea Nakayama, founder of Replenish PDX, is a Holistic Health Coach, Nutrition Counselor and Nutrition Educator. She has worked with thousands of clients internationally using a whole foods approach to nutrition. Andrea’s personal and educational experience has led her to believe in three core principles: that each person has the unique capability to heal and thrive, that a person cannot heal without examining why they’re hurting, and that it’s important to always ask yourself “What’s going on in there?”
Andrea’s personal passion around food and its healing benefits began with her own family health crisis that led her to develop what she calls “the key and lock approach” which enables her to propose the root cause of illnesses and address the appropriate diet to suit the needs of the underlying condition.
Andrea’s work has been featured in Martha Stewart’s Whole Living magazine as well as various health and wellness bogs, radio shows and publications nationwide. She serves as an in-house nutrition consultant for several organizations.
Judy is the Legislative Policy Director for the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists and the Center for Nutrition Advocacy. Her advocacy work on right-to-practice issues began in Michigan, when as a nutrition practitioner, her clinical nutrition practice became threatened by a nearly RD-only regulation passed in 2006. Judy is a founding member of Michigan Nutrition Association which helped delay implementation of that law, and is now shepherding a bill to repeal that law through the MI legislature.
Through the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists and its Center for Nutrition Advocacy, Judy works nationally towards a future in which all those trained in the tools of nutrition have a safe-guarded right to practice to the level of their training.
